# Ionic Strength Formula

The ionic strength of the solution is the measure of the ion concentration in the solution.It is represented as I. It affects the ion activity. It represents with the ion interaction with water molecules and other ion in solution. The ionic strength formula is used to calculate the half of sum total concentration of each ionic species.

Ionic strength formula is given by

where Ci is the molar concentration of an ion in a solution,
z is the valence.

## Ionic Strength Examples

Lets see some examples on ionic strength:

### Solved Examples

Question 1: Calculate the ionic strength of KCl if its concentration is 2 M.
Solution:

Given:
 Ions Z C Z2 K+ 1 2 1 Cl- 1 2 1

The ionic strength is given by
I = $\frac{1}{2}$ [(2 $\times$ 1) + (2 $\times$ 1)]

= 2

Question 2: Calculate the ionic strength of K2SO4.
Solution:

Given
 Ions Z C Z2 K+ 1 2 1 SO4-2 2 1 4

The ionic strength is given by
I = $\frac{1}{2}$ [(2 $\times$ 1) + (1 $\times$ 4)]
= 3
