# Stress Formula

We all come under word Stress in our daily life when some external thing affects our state of mind. Similarly in physics Stress is the external restoring force acting per unit area.

Stress is denoted by $\sigma$. It is expressed in N/m2.

Stress formula is given by
Where,

F = Force applied
A = Area on which force is acting.

Stress formula is used to find stress applied on any given body if force and area on which force is applied is given in the problem.

## Stress Problems

Below are problems based on stress which may be helpful for you.

### Solved Examples

Question 1: Find the stress if a force of 50 N is acting on an area of 5 mm2?
Solution:

Given: Force F = 50 N,
Area A = 5mm2
The stress is given by Stress = $\frac{F}{A}$
= $\frac{50 N}{5 \times 10^{-6}}$
= 10 \times 106 Nm2.

Question 2: An elastic spring is given a force of 1000 N over an area of 0.2 m2. Calculate the stress?
Solution:

Given: Force F = 1000 N,
Area A = 0.2 m2
The stress is given by Stress = $\frac{F}{A}$
= $\frac{1000 N}{0.2}$
= 5000 Nm2.
